![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A better immediate approach would be to enforce rights and welfare standards, and from there you get into another ethical debate: does a parent have the right to raise a child with the culture and education they wish? If the answer is yes, then freeing the elves anytime soon is probably impossible. Though, even if it is cultural (which it probably is) I think we can agree that Hermione’s approach in canon of forced freedom was wrong. That said, even if this is the case, Dobby (as well as some other elves from what he implies in COS) desire freedom, and so you’d need to acknowledge that this isn’t perfect.Īnd ultimately, I think it’s a disservice to Dobby’s character to write him to want to be a slave. I mean, if you one day have a toaster with artificial intelligence and the toaster likes toasting and doesn’t care about the rest of the rights we as humans are entitled to, what is the solution? And it’s one we as a society probably need to start thinking about as our machines get smarter. I think it presents a pretty interesting moral quandary for readers. Personally, I don’t think the idea there is a magical explanation for most house elves enjoying slavery is inherently a bad thing. ![]()
